Why go to Barcelona

Barcelona works on two speeds. There is the famous version, with the Sagrada Familia, Gaudi and the crowds, and there is the ordinary city just behind it: the grid of the Eixample, small squares in Gracia, markets that locals actually use. Doing only the first is exhausting. Mixing the two is what makes the trip.

The sea helps. Being able to finish a heavy sightseeing morning with an hour on the sand changes the rhythm of a city break completely.

What to do

Book Sagrada Familia in advance

Timed entry only, and it sells out. Late afternoon light through the windows is the best of it.

Walk Gracia in the evening

Small squares, neighbourhood bars and no coach parties. This is where the city relaxes.

Take the funicular up Montjuic

Gardens, views and a break from street level. Easy to combine with the Joan Miro foundation.

Eat at a market away from the centre

Santa Caterina and Sant Antoni are markets people shop in, not just photograph.

Spend a morning at the beach

Barceloneta is the convenient one. Walk north for more space and fewer people.

Day trip to Montserrat or Sitges

A mountain monastery or a seaside town, both about an hour out.

Where to stay

Eixample

Well connected, quieter at night, plenty of good mid range hotels. The best default.

Gracia

Residential and characterful, with real neighbourhood life. Slightly further from the main sights.

El Born and Gothic Quarter

Atmospheric and central, but noisy. Great if you plan late nights, hard if you do not.

Getting there and around

  • El Prat airport (BCN) links to the centre by train, metro and the Aerobus in 25 to 40 minutes.
  • High speed trains connect Madrid in under three hours and southern France in a similar time.
  • Girona and Reus airports are used by some low cost routes and sit roughly 90 minutes away by coach.

The metro is fast, cheap and covers everything. A ten trip ticket is much better value than singles. The centre is walkable but larger than it looks on a map.

What it costs

Budget: Hostels, menu del dia at lunch, metro passes and free viewpoints keep costs sensible.

Mid range: Eixample hotel, two or three paid attractions, dinner out nightly.

Higher end: Design hotels, tasting menus and private guides for the Gaudi sites.
