Why go to Rome
Rome punishes over planning. The city is dense, hot for half the year, and full of things that take longer than you expect. Two big sights a day is a realistic maximum, and the gaps between them, a piazza, an espresso standing at a bar, a church you walked into by accident, are usually what you remember.
The food is straightforward and consistent: four or five classic pasta dishes, pizza al taglio by weight, and gelato that varies enormously by shop. Walk ten minutes away from anything famous and quality improves immediately.
What to do
Book the Colosseum and Forum together
One ticket covers both plus the Palatine. Timed entry, and it sells out days ahead in season.
See the Vatican Museums early or late
First entry or an evening opening. In the middle of the day it is shoulder to shoulder.
Walk Trastevere in the evening
Across the river, cobbled and full of restaurants. Touristy but still enjoyable.
Visit the Pantheon
Free to look at from outside, and remarkable inside. Go at opening or in the rain.
Eat pizza al taglio for lunch
By the slice, sold by weight. Cheap, fast and reliably good.
Find a viewpoint at sunset
The Aventine keyhole, Gianicolo, or the Pincio terrace above Piazza del Popolo.
Where to stay
Monti
Central, characterful and walkable to the Colosseum, with good restaurants and less noise than the tourist core.
Trastevere
Atmospheric and lively at night. Charming, but loud on weekends.
Prati
Quiet, residential and near the Vatican, with better value hotels and excellent food shops.
Getting there and around
- Fiumicino (FCO) connects to Termini by the Leonardo Express in 32 minutes. Ciampino (CIA) serves low cost airlines and uses buses.
- High speed trains reach Florence in 90 minutes and Naples in about an hour.
- The historic centre is best reached by train and taxi rather than by driving.
Walk. The centre is compact and much of it is closed to traffic. The metro has only three lines and misses most of the historic core.
What it costs
Budget: Guesthouses outside the centre, pizza by the slice, free churches and viewpoints. Very doable.
Mid range: Central hotel, two ticketed sights, dinner out each night and a guided Vatican tour.
Higher end: Historic hotels near the Spanish Steps, private early access tours and long lunches.
